So this weekend, I decided to make bone broth using beef marrow bones, neck bones, and shank bones. I always like to have some home-made bone broth on hand as it makes a fantastic base for sauce, gravy, and soup.  Of course, you can always buy chicken or beef stock, but there’s something really satisfying about making your own—and you know exactly what’s in it.  I usually make a big batch so that I can freeze it for future use (in quart-sized containers or even muffin tins, if I want smaller volumes).  Bone broth is very good for you! It has collagen, amino acids, and minerals, all of which are essential for the human body. It helps support your gut, the immune system, and joint health.  It also supports the inflammatory response, boosts energy, helps with a better night sleep, gives you better skin, and supports weight loss! All in all, bone broth is amazing! As an added bonus, it tastes delicious and makes the house smell amazing while you’re making it!

First, season the bones with Sylva’s Kitchen Fault Line Seasoning (or at least some salt and pepper) and roast the bones in the oven on a baking sheet for an hour at 400 degrees (if you’re making stock out of leftover chicken bones from a roasted chicken, this step is already done). Next, roughly chop carrots, celery, onion, and leeks and put them in the oven with the beef for the last 15 minutes (I skip roasting the veggies if I’m using chicken bones—just put it all right into the stock pot). After that, transfer everything to a large stock pot, fill it with water to the top, and then cooked it “low and slow” for at least 12 hours, more if you have the time and inclination (I cooked my beef bone broth for a total of 32 hours, this time).  The longer it cooks, the more nutrients you pull out of the bones, into the broth. By doing this, you’ll make one of the richest broths you’ve ever had. If you have the time, I suggest making bone broth. It’s great to sip on its own or as a base for, or addition to, your next wonderful soup or sauce. Next time you go to the butcher, make sure to grab some beef bones and make this delicious broth.
