Mango Cadillac Margarita

Here’s a nice spin on the classic Cadillac Margarita.  The mango nectar in this recipe is sure to make this Cadillac margarita feel like you are sipping it somewhere on a tropical beach.  A Cadillac margarita is a bit different from a classic margarita, as this cocktail includes premium tequila and Grand Marnier.  It became known as a Cadillac because it’s top shelf, just like the Cadillac vehicle.  In my version of the Cadillac, I take some shortcuts by using premade mix, but I never skimp on the tequila and Grand Marnier.  The thing to remember is that everyone’s idea of great tequila is different–smoky, fruity, they’re all different.  The key is to buy what you like.

My favorite is Corralejo Reposado.  Corralejo Reposado tequila is crafted in Guanajuato, Mexico since launching in 1996.  It is made with 100% Blue Agave that takes 6-8 years to become ripe.  Once ripe, the leaves of the plant are removed leaving a pineapple-shaped mass that is slow-cooked for 36 hours in clay ovens.  The Agave pineapples are then rested for twelve hours before being pressed and their juice extracted.  The juice is mixed with a special yeast and other flavors and then stored in charred oak barrels for four months.

Grand Marnier is a blend of fine cognac and exotic bitter orange liqueur that has been in the works since 1827.  There are other orange liquors on the market that will do in a pinch, but, if at all possible, I recommend sticking with Grand Marnier for its amazingly rich flavor.

To make the perfect Mango Cadillac Margarita, start with a glass of ice, add about a tablespoon of agave nectar to give it a touch of sweetness, then add 2 ounces of your favorite tequila (seriously, try the Corralejo!).  Add about 1 ounces of margarita mix and 1 ounce of mango nectar (adjust to your own taste—more mix for tartness, more mango for sweetness).  Now for the good stuff–top it with 1 ounce of Grand Marnier.  Give it a stir and enjoy!
